Next Steps for HB 1532: Senate Education Committee
Thank you for your efforts in support of HB 1532. It PASSED in the ND House of Representatives with a vote of 54-40 on February 21. HB 1532 now moves to the ND Senate, and we ask for your support and your voice ensuring that parents in our state have the right to choose the best school for their child's education.
The Senate Education Committee PASSED the bill, 4-2! Next steps: Appropriation!
HB 1532 provides a modest reimbursement for educational expenses, through a transparent process to parents that choose to send their child to a qualified non-public school.
Each family would be eligible for an educational reimbursement for each student attending a non-public school in grades K-12.
HB 1532 does not take any funds or resources away from students attending public schools.
This reimbursement is not unconstitutional.
HB 1532 has no impact on the funding for public K-12 schools in North Dakota. This program is funded by a new appropriation separate from that of public school K-12 foundation aid payments.
The cost of the program is capped by the appropriation granted through our state legislature, currently set at $24 million for the biennium. The reimbursement amount per student in no more than 30% of the state’s base per-pupil rate.
